My Dearest,
I often wonder if you ever think of me. Not in the way I think of you, perhaps, which is with a gentle ache, a ghost of a smile, and the faint scent of rain-soaked earth. But perhaps just a fleeting memory, a melody on the radio, or a shared glance at something familiar.
It’s been years, hasn’t it? Years since we last spoke, since our paths diverged like rivers meeting the sea, each flowing towards a different horizon. I remember the day we said goodbye, or rather, the day we didn’t say goodbye, but simply stopped reaching.
There was a quiet understanding in the air, a silent acknowledgment that our story, for all its intensity and fire, had reached its natural conclusion. We were two stars burning so brightly together that we risked consuming each other, leaving only ash in our wake.
That’s what I told myself then, anyway. A logical explanation for an illogical heartbreak. A way to rationalize the tearing away of a piece of my very soul, wrapped in the guise of self-preservation. Perhaps it was true.
But sometimes, in the dead of night, or on a particularly melancholic Sunday afternoon, I allow myself to wonder. What if we had held on tighter? What if we had fought harder, not against each other, but for what we had?
It felt like a choice between two impossible things: sacrificing ourselves for the relationship, or sacrificing the relationship for ourselves. We chose the latter, or at least, I did. I was the one who finally, quietly, slipped away, convinced it was for the best.
It was not for lack of love, you must know that. My love for you was a wildfire, uncontrollable and fierce. It consumed me, changed me, shaped me in ways I never knew possible. It taught me about joy so pure it brought tears to my eyes, and pain so profound it felt like a physical wound.
---
I remember our last conversation vividly. We were sitting on that old park bench, the one carved with initials that weren't ours, watching the leaves fall. You talked about your dreams, and I listened, my heart swelling with pride and a strange, heavy dread.
My dreams, I realized, were becoming tangled with yours, indistinguishable, and I was terrified. Terrified of losing myself completely, of becoming an echo of your desires rather than a whole person with my own voice. It was a fear that overshadowed all the love.
So I let go. I unclasped my fingers, one by one, from the lifeline we had built together. I watched as we drifted apart, a decision made with the clarity of a moonlit night, yet executed with the clumsiness of a child learning to walk.
Did I make the right choice? I don’t know. There are moments when I believe wholeheartedly that it was necessary for both of us to find our individual paths, to become the people we were meant to be, unburdened by the weight of our shared intensity.
And then there are other moments. Moments when a song plays, or a scent drifts by, or a familiar face catches my eye in a crowd, and the thought of you hits me like a physical blow. A sudden, sharp longing for a life that might have been.
I see you sometimes, in glimpses. A social media post, a mention from a mutual acquaintance. You look well. Happy, even. That brings me a quiet, bittersweet comfort. It means my sacrifice, if you can call it that, wasn't in vain.
This letter, of course, will never reach you. It’s a confession whispered into the wind, a release of old burdens, a quiet nod to a past that still resonates within me. A love I let go, but never truly forgot.
May your life be full, my dear. May your dreams continue to flourish, and may you find all the joy you deserve. Thank you for the fire, for the lessons, for the bittersweet beauty of our time together.
Remember the good times.
