If I could send a letter back in time, it would be to you, standing on the cusp of everything, brimming with questions and fears.
**If I could send a letter back in time, it would be to you, standing on the cusp of everything, brimming with questions and fears.**
Dear Me,
It’s strange, writing to you like this. I can see you clearly in my mind’s eye, perched on the edge of your bed, perhaps with a dog-eared poetry book open beside you, or a half-finished drawing spread across your knees. You’re all elbows and dreams, aren't you?
You're seventeen. The world feels both impossibly vast and suffocatingly small. You’re convinced you know so much, and yet, every day brings a new wave of uncertainty that washes over you, leaving you breathless and a little scared.
I wish I could tell you to just breathe. To lean into the awkwardness, to embrace the pangs of longing that feel like a physical ache in your chest. Those feelings aren't weaknesses; they're the raw material of your future.
There’s a quiet anger stirring inside you, I know. It hums beneath the surface, a low thrum against the ribs of your carefully constructed peace. Some of it is righteous, a fire that will serve you well later. Some of it is just a misplaced hurt, and it will take a long time for you to learn the difference.
You're so desperate for acceptance, for someone to truly see you. And because of that, you’ll bend yourself into shapes that don’t quite fit, trying to please others, trying to belong. Please, try not to lose sight of the vibrant, sometimes messy, truth of who you are.
That first heartbreak? It will feel like the end of the world. You'll spend nights staring at the ceiling, convinced you'll never feel joy again, that you're somehow broken beyond repair. But trust me, you will heal. The scars will fade into wisdom, and you will love again, more deeply and truly than you can imagine now.
---
Your parents. They’re doing their best, even when it feels like they’re miles away, speaking a different language. The distance between you isn't a chasm; it’s just a phase. You’ll find your way back to understanding, to a different kind of connection, one built on mutual respect rather than childhood reliance.
Those friendships that feel like they're carved in stone? Some will last, precious and enduring. Others will drift, like leaves on a current, leaving behind only echoes. Grieve them when they go, but understand that letting go is also a form of love, a recognition of growth that pulls you in different directions.
You have such grand plans, so many dreams sketched out in notebooks and whispered to the night sky. Hold onto them. Some will change, morphing into something even better, something you can't even conceive of yet. Others will remain constant, beacons guiding you through the fog.
Don't be afraid to make mistakes. You’re going to make so many of them. Some will be hilarious, some will be embarrassing, and some will genuinely hurt. But every single one will teach you something invaluable, shaping you into the person you're meant to become.
That quiet voice inside you, the one that whispers doubts and fears? Don’t let it drown out the other voice, the one that tells you you’re capable, that you’re worthy, that you have something unique to offer the world. Nurture that voice; it’s your truest guide.
Life won't always be fair, and sometimes it will feel incredibly heavy. There will be moments of profound sadness, loss that feels unbearable. But there will also be astonishing beauty, exhilarating joy, and moments of connection that will make your heart swell with gratitude.
Embrace the quiet moments, the ones where you’re alone with your thoughts, creating. These are the moments that truly nourish your soul. This is where your strength lies, in the stillness, in the creation.
So, my younger self, please, for the love of everything, be kind to yourself. You are enough. You are more than enough. The journey ahead is long and winding, but it is glorious. Live it fully.
With all the love and understanding gained over the years,
Me (your future).
Practice self-compassion tonight.
