Today hadn’t been a good day. It had been one of those relentless, draining days where every task felt like scaling a mountain, and every interaction left me feeling a little smaller. My head throbbed faintly behind my eyes.
I was reaching for a small bag of frozen peas, the last item on my mental list, when I heard a soft cough behind me. I turned, a little startled, to see an older woman, probably in her late sixties, with kind eyes framed by wiry grey hair.
She held out a single, perfectly segmented orange slice on a small piece of napkin. The color was a vibrant, almost improbable, jewel against the stark white.
"You look like you could use this," she said, her voice a low, gentle rumble. There was no pity in her gaze, just a quiet understanding. Her own cart, I noticed, was full of healthy greens and some exotic-looking spices.
I blinked, my hand still poised for the peas. "Oh, no, really, I couldn't. Thank you, though." My voice sounded rusty, unused.
"Nonsense. I always peel an orange for the walk home. This one's extra sweet, I promise." She gave a small, encouraging smile, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Go on, take it."
