To make a will in Canada, list what you own, choose an executor and beneficiaries, write the will, then sign it following your province's rules — usually in front of two adult witnesses who are not beneficiaries. Store the original safely and tell your executor where it is. Each province sets its own rules: Ontario (Succession Law Reform Act), Quebec (Civil Code: notarial, holograph or witnessed wills), British Columbia (WESA, wills from age 16), Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
Prepare ID, beneficiary names, an executor and back-up, a guardian for children, lists of assets and debts, and existing RRSP, TFSA and insurance designations. General information, not legal advice.
